I live in Georgia and oppose rescinding the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule. Please select the No Action alternative and retain the rule. Georgia’s roadless areas protect clean water, wildlife habitat, intact forests, recreation and local economies. The rule already allows necessary work involving wildfire, disease and public safety. Removing these protections could increase road construction, habitat fragmentation, erosion and long-term maintenance costs. Please retain the Roadless Rule. I recently hiked the approach trail to springer mountain to see my daughter finish her through hike on the Appalachian trail. These proposed chains threaten not only the trail but the wilderness area's that make the AT an incredible place. Thank you, Brendan Breault

I want to be able to not worry that places like Amicalola or the Cohutta Wilderness or backcountry N GA might ever be under threat - these are treasures and places I'm trying to let my children experience and ultimately theirs too. Worrying that wild N GA wilderness will shrink because of these interests deeply offends me as a lifelong GA native, born in Atlanta and raised in N GA.

My first memories of young independence were hiking the Benton MacKaye and Appalachian trails. Additionally, my parents have recently purchased a house in the area to enjoy the proximity to these natural resources. That is two very divergent political leanings, both deeply upset by this proposal.

Georgia residents receive little to no lasting benefit from rescinding these protections. Any short-term economic gains come at the expense of forests and natural areas that, once disturbed, can never be returned to their original state.

I have enjoyed fishing, camping, and hiking off the beaten path and prefer to keep the forest a sacred and undisturbed habitat for all life to enjoy, especially the younger generations that actually give a damn about the outdoors.. Please don’t commit this atrocity against our beloved forests.

Sharing & methodology

Please cite us. This analysis is the intellectual property of Roadless.org and Nicholas Holshouser. You are welcome to reproduce it — every reproduction must include this citation:
Roadless.org and Nicholas Holshouser, “2001 Roadless Rule Revision — Substantive Analysis,” https://roadless.org.

How it works. A large language model (an open-weight Qwen3.8 model) reads each substantive comment and copies, word for word, the passages that carry its analytical gap, evidence, request, alternative and connection to the place; it returns no scores. Code grades those passages 0–3 on eight dimensions — evidence, legal grounding, engagement with the environmental analysis, analytical gaps, alternatives, specific requests, position, and local knowledge — with legal grounding taken from a citation scan, not the model. For the strongest tenth on each side, the copied passages are checked against the comment and shown as exhibits. A comment counts as “substantive” when it clears a floor filter — it must show at least one substantive signal (a named entity, a specific citation, a stated analytical deficiency, or first-person testimony), which screens out one-line and purely conclusory submissions before any model scoring.
